matter that rises immediately to the floor is who is going to be the secretary of defense. the person whose name has been floated this week is chuck hagel. republicans are trying to stop his potential nomination too, even though chuck hagel himself is a former republican senator. they think he is not right wing enough. chuck hagel does not just have critics on the right, though. on the left there is rumbling that democratic presidents should stop putting republicans in the secretary of defense job like bill clinton did with bill cohen and president obama already did once with bob gates. calling it the bizarre tradition of sorts where democratic presidents suddenly act like republicans are right, that only they, republicans, can run our national security affairs. so there is general criticism from the left that democrats should stop bolstering the myth that republicans are stronger on defense because they're republicans, and therefore, only republicans should run defense even when a democrat is president. but there is also this one very specific criticism of chuck hagel individually. i

reports, the president's most recent ask was for 1.2 trillion in revenue, additional savings in defense a hundred billion, that's a come bind total net savings of roughly 3.4 trillion dollars. that's close to what the economist have called for in a package. let me be quick to say what we don't know is how is the alternative minimum tax being treated because that cost about $800 billion to fix. we don't know how the other tax extenders are being treated because that cost another $800 if we're going to extend those provisions. we don't know how the dock fix is being handled because those doctors are going to take a cut of 28% if nothing is done. that cost ability $240 billion over ten years to fix. if all of those things were done an offset that would dramatically reduce the savings of this package. but we don't know. i've heard and read press reports saying that overseas contingency operations, so called war cost are being used as an offset to the minimum tax or perhaps the doc fix and that i've read may amount to as much as $800 billion. so i don't think we have sufficient information t

the defense minister four years was a suni, which is important to the arab nationalists. his deputy was a member of a key alawite family closely tied to the assad regime. i think the challenge really is trying to figure out where the extended family network stops and where the broader alawite community begins. that is not easy. assad, the father and the sun has inherited this. they have been a pretty remarkable job incorporating all of the different elements of the alawite community and making sure there are included in the system. certainly they are facing a fall from status, or at least a perceived fall from status. the question is how much are they facing an existential threat to them? that is something the assad has been effective at convincing the alawite population they're facing an existential threat. you could make the argument that some of the regime's key violence was an effort to in some ways radicalize the opposition to make this point clear to the alawite community that they need to rally around the raceme. i would. in particular to the first car bombs that went off a d

as republicans want but clearly they have moved on that. and i also think there will be substantial defense cuts, if we want to make a dent in the deficit. i mean this is the choice that is going to be in front of us. if, we have to do four things if we want to reduce the deficit. we have to get more revenue, we have to cut domestic spending, we have to trim and reform the health care programs in particular of medicare and medicaid and we have to cut defense. if we do all four of those things we can make significant down payment getting deficit under control. if we do some of them, the numbers are not there enough to make as much progress as we want. this is where mark and i agree. over next six to nine months we could see substantial progress towards smart fiscal policy in the country if the two parties come together. heather: we'll see what happens. thank you both very much for joining us until monday night. thank you. >> merry christmas. happy new year.
